Old Gulf Station

History Stop

Just across the street from the old Gulf Station you might notice a lion statue. Well, there's a story there. In 1890, the local blacksmith's wife adopted an infant cub from a circus company passing through town. The tamed lion occasionally escaped its owner's yard and roamed the community. Putting a stop to the shenanigans and complaints, the town passed an ordinance requiring lions to be leashed.

The lion has become the official, unofficial mascot of the town; see how many you spot on your travels through town.
