Shiloh Baptist Church

History Stop

Completed in 1880, Shiloh Baptist Church is the oldest church building in Alderson. Shiloh is a symbol of the spiritual strength of the African American community. It has been a significant presence statewide, hosting annual meetings of the West Virginia Baptist Convention in the 1890s, 1909 and 1915.

The Grand United Order of Odd Fellows occupied the space over Shiloh’s social hall. When African Americans were refused membership in America’s Independent Order of Odd Fellows, they formed the Grand United Order of the benevolent society in 1842. The Alderson lodge was chartered in 1885.

This "history stop" was researched and written by Belinda Anderson. A series of history booklets commissioned by Alderson Main Street and written by Anderson is available for sale. More information is available by calling (304) 445-2916.
