Tucked in a quiet corner of the Monongahela National Forest, Lake Sherwood is a 165-acre mountain oasis revered for its swimming, fishing, kayaking and paddleboarding opportunities. Come equipped with picnic-fixings and wile away the afternoon on the lake’s only island -- connected to the “mainland” by an arched walking bridge.

Lake Sherwood Recreation Area is a complete family destination offering a wide variety of outdoor options. 

Activities: fishing, swimming, beaches, picnic shelter, playground, volleyball court, boat ramp and hiking trails 

Fishing: tiger muskie, channel catfish, bullhead, bluegill and largemouth bass

Trails: These trails circle the lake and branch off into the surrounding forest. Trails include the Lake Sherwood Trail, Upper Meadow Trail, Meadow Mountain Trail and Meadow Creek Trail. 

Camping: Just right for tents and small campers, the campground has 104 sites spread across multiple loops featuring a mix of wooded and open spots. 

  • Each campsite has a parking spur, tent pad, picnic table, fire ring and lantern post. 
  • All camping areas have restrooms with running water, flush toilets, hot showers and electricity (available during the summer season only). In the spring and fall, vault toilets and a hand pump well are available.
  • No electrical, sewage or water hook-ups are available, but there is a dump station on-site.
  • Lake Sherwood Camping Reservations: To ensure you'll get the spot you want, it's a good idea to reserve your space in advance.
