RECIPE

Make-at-Home Pepperoni Rolls, a West Virginia Classic

The Pepperoni Roll is truly a West Virginia staple that continues to have a hearty following. It got its start in 1927, when Giuseppe "Joseph" Argiro, a West Virginia coal miner with Italian roots discovered that he could roll the pepperoni right into the bread for a quick, on-the-go meal. Rarely found beyond the borders of West Virginia and Pennsylvania, we thought you might like it, too.

Full disclosure…the pepperoni rolls in the photo are a secret recipe made by Tammy at Fruits of Labor. She gave us this easy, at-home version that you can make with the kids.

  • Buy 1 bag of frozen dough balls for rolls. (Rhodes and Kroger brands are both great)
  • Place bag in refrigerator overnight or until thawed.
  • Pull out the next day and take a rolling pin and roll out each dough ball.
  • Sprinkle 1 TBS of shredded mozzarella cheese on each one.
  • Put 6-8 pieces of pepperoni on each one.
  • Roll up (like a cinnamon roll). Pinch to seal.
  • Place on a greased pan. Cooking spray works, too.
  • Cover with plastic wrap and place in a warm area in the kitchen to proof for 1-2 hours.
  • Bake at 375 degrees until golden brown and finished inside.
  • Remove from pan immediately onto cooling rack.
  • ENJOY!
