Winter Weekend Getaway in the Greenbrier Valley

Winter in the Greenbrier Valley is an invitation to hibernate, together. Think crackling fires, quiet time and stargazing under mountain skies. We balance it with unhurried pleasures that feel discovered, not scheduled. It could be a tasting tour, a quiet walk along a winter trail or a massage for two. Join us for a winter escape designed for relaxation, where slowing down and being fully present are the point.

Take a look at this sampling of ways to get a grip on old man winter.

Where to Stay for Your Weekend Away

In winter, where you stay is a big part of your getaway. The right lodging becomes your respite—warm, cozy and intentionally removed from the bustle of everyday life. Across the Greenbrier Valley, local proprietors create spaces that lean into the season, winter-ready hideaways that set the tone for a weekend away.

Here are a few places that make winter the perfect time to settle in and let the valley work its quiet magic.

Historic General Lewis Inn. Handcrafted care defines the experience at the historic inn. From the moment you step into the lobby, the atmosphere settles in—welcoming and friendly. Ease into your stay with a craft cocktail in the Thistle Lounge, then linger over a farm-to-table meal in the inn’s intimate dining room. Even retiring for the night feels like a special occasion. Each guest room blends history with modern comfort, telling its own rich story. On a chilly evening, you may find there’s no reason to go anywhere else.

Thomas Rose Inn. Winter at the Thomas Rose Inn offers a peaceful escape where historic charm meets boutique luxury. This restored home in downtown Lewisburg features private, intimate spaces that set the mood, while guests enjoy complimentary champagne or wine.

"Guests can unwind with us at our little inn—picture warm lighting, soft blankets and quiet corners for a truly cozy weekend.”

Pomona The Salt Cave & Spa. At this mountain retreat, expect a deeply restorative winter escape focused on health and wellness. The salt-infused rooms are designed for overnight halotherapy, complete with ambient warmth and a calming glow. Winter season delivers cozy extras like seasonal spa treatments, hot towels and evenings by the firepit.

“We’ve created a space where nature and nurture work together. Our mountain setting calms the mind; our salt cave and spa therapies restore the body, and our lodging carries it all through the night. That’s the Pomona experience.” — Raven W. Wehmeier, Spa Director.

Spring Row Cottages at The Greenbrier. When setting the mood, look no further than these charming private retreats. A spacious bedroom suite, warm fireplace and view of The Greenbrier’s north lawn or historic Springhouse have all the elements of love. Add a little extra romance with a rose petal turndown and The Greenbrier’s signature “sweetheart” box with handcrafted chocolates and chilled Rosé.

Unique lodging just right for a winter stay.

Things to Do on Your Winter Escape

Downtown Lewisburg regularly tops must-see lists from around the country. Pick up a hot coffee from The Wild Bean and take an afternoon to poke around the artsy shops, galleries and museums.

Warm your insides with a tasting tour of the valley’s fine craft beverage-making operations. Learn what grain-to-glass is all about while enjoying a round or two of small-batch sipping. Smooth Ambler Spirits ~ Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company ~ Old School Brewing Company.

In the mood for a show? Carnegie Hall is a cultural center for arts and education with an annual series of live performances, independent films and gallery exhibits. Greenbrier Valley Theatre is the state professional theatre of West Virginia. This versatile space plays host to live theatre, music and art events.

JAN 30/31. Mark your calendars for the two-day Lewisburg Winter Music Festival, an all-out celebration featuring dozens of bands across seven stages throughout downtown Lewisburg. What better way to spend a winter weekend!

Carnegie Hall is one of only four in operation worldwide.

Go on a self-guided excursion at Lost World Caverns, and descend 120 feet below the Earth's surface into a vast chamber filled with stalactites and stalagmites. The walking tour is a half-mile loop that takes about 45 minutes. Be sure to stop in the natural history museum to see prehistoric artifacts "unearthed" in 1967!

After the rush of the holidays, a spa day at Pomona Salt Cave and Spa is the reset you actually need. Tucked literally in the mountains, it's restorative, unapologetically indulgent and the most relaxing way to step into the new year.

The Greenbrier dates back to 1778. Its long history is part of its allure, but it’s the 10,000 acres of activities that make it worth the trip.

An underground hideaway built for Congress, the declassified Cold War Bunker was equipped with House and Senate chambers, dorms, power plant, clinic, cafeteria… even a decontamination area. Step through the 18-ton blast door to learn its secrets and how it was kept hidden for more than 30 years.

Take a spin on The Greenbrier’s ice skating rink, featuring lights, music and a rink-side fire pit.

JAN 6TH - National Cuddle Up Day

Explore the sprawling grounds and winter landscape at the leisurely pace of a horse-drawn carriage -- or sleigh ride. The 18th-century-style outing encompasses The Old White Golf Course and circles back to the North Entrance of the hotel.

There would be no Greenbrier if not for the historical significance and notable benefits of White Sulphur Springs’ healing waters. The resort’s Mineral Spa originates from that reputation, offering treatments and therapies to soothe and rejuvenate, including, of course, a soak in the famous sulphur waters.
