The Meadow River Rail Trail runs 18.5 miles through rugged, scenic country. This point-to-point trail welcomes those on foot, bikers (including e-bikers) and horseback riders, with a hard-packed gravel surface, a gentle grade, and enough width for side-by-side travel. The grade drops from south to north, so heading north is the gentler, downhill direction.
A tree canopy shades much of the route, keeping it comfortable on summer rides. You'll catch frequent views of the river along the way, including two dramatic bridge crossings that open up scenery only rail operators used to see.
Meadow River Rail Trailheads. There are two main trailheads, one at each end of the trail. At the southern end, drive into Rainelle and follow Snake Island Road to the parking area. It's paved, with a sheltered picnic table and handicap parking. At the northern terminus, parking sits next to the Nallen Post Office, a gravel lot with plenty of room for horse trailers.
