History Stop

Construction of the county's third courthouse began in 1837. The wings were added in 1937 and 1963. It has been the center of the county's government since its completion in 1840, having replaced the stone courthouse that once stood on Washinton Street.

It's more titillating history includes a trial involving the account of a ghost. Zona Heaster Shue’s death in 1897 was first presumed the result of natural causes. Then her mother said Zona had appeared and described how her husband Edward had killed her. Zona’s body was exhumed and an autopsy confirmed the ghostly account. Her husband was found guilty of murder and sent to the state prison.
