Built a century ago, Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg is one of only four still in operation worldwide. It is a nonprofit performing arts and education center offering live concerts, diverse classes and workshops, films, lectures and galleries.
Art Galleries. The four gallery spaces rotate every other month with a unique variety of featured artists.
Arts from the Ashes: The History of Carnegie Hall. Through memorabilia, photography and artifacts, the exhibit chronicles the history of Carnegie Hall since its construction in 1901. Located on the second floor. Free admission. (This exhibit is currently closed.)
Historic Wedding Venue. This original Carnegie Hall has been beautifully restored and features unique spaces for small, intimate weddings. Nestled in the heart of town, the brick-laden Ivy Terrace is the perfect location for your outdoor wedding. The Old Stone Room offers an ideal space for indoor receptions and rehearsal dinners. Also available is the Carnegie Hall Auditorium, where ceremonies can be held on stage for a truly theatrical experience. Let Carnegie Hall bring your wedding to life because a historic occasion deserves a historic location.
With sibling centers in New York, Pittsburgh and Scotland, the Lewisburg Carnegie was built largely with funds donated by industrialist Andrew Carnegie in 1902 to the Lewisburg Female Institute.
The Greek Revival structure provided classroom and stage space for the Institute, which was later renamed Greenbrier College for Women. College alum Bettie Sydenstricker Woodward remembered, “I always had a class that took me to the top floor, either chemistry or trigonometry or college algebra. That was a long hike.” Every week students gathered in the auditorium for chapel services. “You were not excused unless you were dead or dying.”
Bettie later served as board president when Carnegie Hall became a regional center for arts and education.
Today the space offers everything from concerts to classes to free art exhibits.
