With endless possibilities to while away a day at The Greenbrier, some might wonder where to begin. Let this list of 9 day-tripper highlights be your starting guide.

1. An underground hideaway built for Congress, the declassified Cold War Bunker was equipped with House and Senate chambers, dorms, power plant, clinic, cafeteria… even a decontamination area. Step through the 18-ton blast door to learn its secrets and how it was kept hidden for more than 30 years. Tour: 844-223-3173

2. The massive, crystal chandelier that once adorned the 1939 set of Gone with the Wind is now a centerpiece in The Greenbrier Lobby Bar. A quintessential Southern cocktail, it’s only fitting to sip on Mint Juleps in such a classically iconic setting.

3. Tour “America’s Resort,” a labyrinth of luxurious ballrooms, salons and galleries. Decorated in the 1940’s by Dorothy Draper, her dramatic style of bold patterns and vibrant hues embellish every surface -- right down to the powder rooms.

4. One of eight restaurants at the resort, Draper’s not only serves a delicious, southern-style menu -- it’s renowned for mile-wide-banana-splits and other decadent desserts. Grab two spoons and share with a friend.

5. What better way to explore the sprawling gardens and resort grounds than at the leisurely pace of a horse-drawn carriage ride. This 18th-century-style outing encompasses the Old White TPC Golf Course and circles back to the North Entrance of the hotel. Reserve: 855-453-4858 (option 1)

6. Speaking of chariots, how about a four-passenger Jeep Wrangler Rubicon specially equipped for West Virginia's rugged, mountain terrain? A trained guide will show you the ropes. Then you're in charge, navigating the rocks, ruts, creek crossings and steep hills of The Greenbrier's backcountry course. Reserve: 304-536-1110

7. The restorative mineral waters that have drawn visitors for centuries remain at the center of The Greenbrier’s spa experience. From hydrotherapy and body wraps to facials and manicures, expect to be pampered from head to toe. Schedule: 888-598-8412

8. Named the greatest golfer of all-time by the PGA Commissioner in 1986, Sam Snead was a true legend in the sport. His 66-year relationship with The Greenbrier began in 1936. He not only set record-after-record, he was the resort’s Golf Pro Emeritus from 1993 to 2002. Golf aficionados will appreciate standing where he sunk his last hole-in-one -- the 18th green of the Old White TPC. Be sure to time a visit with lunch at Slammin’ Sammy’s, an ode to this great man and his 300-yard drive.

9. The Greenbrier’s collection of 38 boutiques, shops and galleries feature a diverse assortment of fine art, toys, furniture, jewelry, sporting equipment and luxury apparel. Sample handmade chocolates or stop in The Greenbrier Shoppe for a memento of your day at The Greenbrier!
