Spend Memorial Day Weekend in the Greenbrier Valley
Don’t have plans for the weekend? Don’t worry! The Greenbrier Valley is the perfect location for a weekend getaway. We’ve got special events, natural beauty and amazing attractions. And it’s all just a short drive away!
Three special events are taking place this weekend.
The Landing Zone: Rainelle Veterans’ Reunion celebration is held over Memorial Day Weekend. What started as a Run for the Wall in D.C. more than 20 years ago has become a tradition to the community and veterans alike. Highlights of this event include a Memorial Bike Run, a Car & Bike Show and a fireworks display. For a complete schedule of events, visit www.lzrainelle.com.
Join the town of White Sulphur Springs for their five-day West Virginia Dandelion Festival, May 27-31. In celebration and appreciation for the determination of the dandelion, this gutsy little flower fights its way through velvety lawns, dodges mowers and weed killers, and against all odds reigns supreme as it blankets our towns each spring. The festival features street vendors, kid’s activities, contests, an art show, golf tournament, flea market, antique car show and live entertainment. For more information, visit www.wssmainstreet.org or call 304-536-5060.
Greenbrier Valley Theatre, the State Professional Theatre of West Virginia, celebrates its 10 year anniversary on May 29 with a performance by world-class jazz pianist, Ellis Marsalis, with The West Virginia Jazz Orchestra. The pre-show reception begins at 7pm, with the concert following at 8pm. For more information, call the GVT Box Office at 304-645-3838, or visit www.gvtheatre.org.
Natural beauty abounds in the area.
Bicycle enthusiasts will love the 78-mile Greenbrier River Trail which parallels the Greenbrier River. The river itself offers the perfect setting for fishing and kayaking. And for those interested in camping and hiking, visit Greenbrier State Forest, Monongahela National Forest, Blue Bend or Summit Lake Recreational Areas or Lake Sherwood. There are plenty of options for those interested in taking in the area’s natural beauty.
There’s no shortage of things to do.
Between shopping, dining and must-see attractions, the Greenbrier Valley will keep you busy! The charming downtowns are a shopper’s delight and offer everything from hand-made art to unique clothing and specialty antiques.
Food enthusiasts will appreciate the area’s locally-owned restaurants whose chefs incorporate local meats and produce into their menus. Here, you’ll have a chance to cool off with a milkshake from Jim’s Drive-In or bask in the sun at the Tavern 1785’s outdoor patio.
One of the newest attractions in the area is Smooth Ambler Spirits, an artisan, small batch distillery that produces vodka. They offer tastings and tours daily. The local winery, Watts Roost Vineyard, is another enjoyable attraction with a tasting room open during the weekend.
Visit the Greenbrier Valley this Memorial Day Weekend and see why we are a favorite West Virginia destination.
