  • Web: www.carnegiehallwv.com
  • Local: 304-645-7917

Event Description

Type of Event: Concert, Special Events

Capitol Steps, a political satire group, will be performing musical skits beginning at 7:30pm.
The Capitol Steps was born in December, 1981 when some staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. Their first idea was to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn’t find three wise men or a virgin. So, they decided to dig into the headlines of the day, and they created song parodies & skits which conveyed a special brand of satirical humor. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience. Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded over 30 albums, including their latest, Desperate Housemembers. They’ve been featured on NBC, CS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard 4 times a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials.

    Carnegie Hall Presents Anais Mitchell

    Carnegie Hall Presents Anais Mitchell

Saturday, Apr 14 at 7:30 PM

    Event Description

    Type of Event: Special Events

Anais Mitchell, singer and songwriter, will perform Saturday April 14, 2012 at 7:30 p.m.
From her current home base in a 200-year-old farmhouse in rural Vermont, Anaïs (“uh-NAY-iss”) Mitchell writes songs that are as intimate as conversations and as rich in detail as short stories. She is the rare musician who is equally comfortable wielding an acoustic guitar alone onstage, sharing a disc’s worth of alt-country duets, or scripting a vast operatic journey into the underworld. Acoustic Guitar compares her to Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Gillian Welch.

9th Annual Polar Bear Plunge at Blue Bend

9th Annual Polar Bear Plunge at Blue Bend

Saturday, Mar 10 at 1:00 PM

      • Location: Blue Bend Recreational Area
      • Local: 304-645-4668

      Event Description

Type of Event: Outdoor & Nature, Special Events

Organizers of the 9th Annual Greenbrier Valley Polar Bear Plunge Club say the charity event for the non-profit Child and Youth Advocacy Center in Lewsburg is set for Saturday, March 10, beginning at 1pm at the Blue Bend Recreation Area in the Monongahela National Forest.
Since 2001, Over 80 individuals have earned their polar bear membership cards by plunging into the icy waters of Anthony Creek during the month of March. Last year, 40 kindred spirits dipped into the 39 degree water while spectators cheered on their favorite plungers. A new edition to the yearly event was the Greenbrier East Jr. ROTC Color Guard and the trumpet playing of the National Anthem while standing on the Blue Bend swinging bridge.
Planners have been meeting since January and say their polar bear plunge is quickly becoming one of the “must see” annual events in the Greenbrier Valley. Club members each year ask businesses and individuals for sponsorships and all proceeds benefit the 501-c-3, non-profit Child and Youth Advocacy Center, an organization that interviews and counsels sexually abused children in Greenbrier and Pocahontas counties. Currently, members are combing the area seeking Poppa Bear ($100) Momma Bear ($50) and BabyBear ($25) sponsorships. Businesses may be listed on the Polar Bear T-shirts for $100 or listed in the event program for $5o. In the last four years, polar bear members have raised over $10,000 for the CYAC.
The one-hour event also includes club members singing the “Ode to Polar Bear” song, the Polar Bear Spirit Award winner presentation and a giant American Flag hung from the swinging bridge. Scheduled plungers include Lewisburg Mayor John Manchester, retired WV State Police Captain Jan Cahill and retired Rear Admiral Jay Bowling, who will also present a flag to the Polar Bear Spirit Award winner. The club’s Facebook and YouTube pages have generated over 6,000 views in nearly 100 countries all over the world.
The CYAC’s mission is to end child abuse in Greenbrier, Monroe, and Pocahontas Counties of WV by coordinating a multidisciplinary response to child maltreatment through utilizing a team approach to investigation, prosecution, treatment and prevention. For more information on how to sponsor the plunge, contact the CYAC at 304 645 4668 or visit facebook.com/greenbrierpolarbear.

      Cathie Ryan at Carnegie Hall

      Friday, Mar 9

      Event Description

Type of Event: Concert, Special Events

Save the date of March 9 for a Mainstage performance by Cathie Ryan at Carnegie Hall in downtown Lewisburg!
Cathie Ryan personifies Irish-America, a far-flung tribe who love their country yet were born into what their immigrant forebears perceived as exile. Generations later, they still cherish the music, literature and history of their ancestral homeland. Ryan’s eloquent soprano keens and soars as her context shifts between ancient peat fires, long ago Appalachian spring-times and the bittersweet romanticism of a modern singer-songwriter.
