First Trip to West Virginia
By: Shelley from Chester Springs, PA
My husband and I traveled to Lewisburg in July and had the most spectacular time. It was our first trip to West Virginia and we were amazed at all there was to do.
Saturday morning we went blueberry picking at White Oak Blueberry Farm in Renick, just a short drive from downtown Lewisburg. The blueberries were amazing-the biggest and healthiest I’ve seen in a long time! It was so relaxing to be out in the fields with views of the mountains all around us and just the sounds of nature and other happy families having a great time. My husband and I each picked a huge bucket-full and took them home to Pennsylvania with us. We froze what we couldn’t eat right away and were able to bake with them for months afterward!
Then we went back to Lewisburg and had lunch at Jim’s Drive-In just outside of town. It’s an actual, honest to goodness, old fashioned drive-in where you pull up, roll down your window and someone comes to you, takes your order, then brings it out on a tray that attaches to your window. So much fun! And the food was awesome-sure, it was “fast food” but not like we were used to. Everything was cooked fresh and the French fries were made from potatoes they just peeled that morning. And the place was packed-it was obvious that it was a local favorite. Oh, and the milk shakes-all kinds of flavors!
We spent the rest of the day touring downtown Lewisburg-I was really impressed by all the privately owned shops. Each was very unique and you really got the feeling that all the shop owners take pride in their town. There isn’t a single chain in the downtown area-it really adds to the charm. There wasn’t a performance running at Carnegie Hall this weekend, but we did get to tour the three art exhibits they had running. Honestly, I just thought it was neat that this little town had a Carnegie Hall!
On Sunday we had reservations with Ace Adventure Center in Oak Hill, about an hour away, for an all day whitewater rafting trip. Neither of us had been rafting before so had no idea what to expect-but our guide was great and took really good care of us. We got to surf West Virginia style…right before we flipped over! So much fun and such an easy drive from Lewisburg. Before we headed home, we stopped to take pictures of the New River Gorge and the famous bridge there.
Monday we had to head home, but we are definitely planning to come back. There was so much that we didn’t have time to see and do.
